Description

The Bank at 87 Commissioner is an ideal central location from which to travel to all Johannesburg 2010 FIFA World Cup stadiums. Situated on the adjacent block to the City Hall, and overlooking some of Johannesburg’s most historic and beautiful buildings, is "The Bank". This apartment and commercial building ranks as one of the most prestigious developments of its kind in the city.

Built in the 1930's by one of old Johannesburg’s foremost architects, Gordon Leith, it served for many years as the headquarters of Barclays Bank. Constructed of sandstone in the architectural style of the "Modern Movement Era", but including many Art Deco features, the building is regarded as a fine example, with its square classism and imposing colonnades. Constructed at a time when the Witwatersrand Gold Reef was the most prolific in the world, the building is, as one would expect, typified by generous use of luxurious materials and excellent craftsmanship and finishes. It is now preserved under the National Heritage Act.

The old ground-floor triple volume banking hall has been converted into a dramatic and luxurious restaurant and cigar lounge, providing an up-market, in house refuge from the bustle of Commissioner Street. Contrary to most new developments in the city, the apartment space of the building has been divided into a small number of large apartments, with no more than four units per floor.

Directly outside the front entrance on Commissioner Street runs the primary spine of the new north/south "Rea Vaya" rapid transport system, with busses running every three minutes to the main Johannesburg Park Street, Gautrain Station. On the other side of the same block, on Market Street, runs the main spine of the east/west system. Additionally, there is very easy and rapid access to both the M1 and M2 motorways.

Numerous trendy cafes, eateries and restaurants as well as up market retail shops are in close proximity to "The Bank". Within walking distance is the cultural precinct of Newtown which has now established itself as the entertainment centre of cosmopolitan Johannesburg.
